THE BEGINNINGS
OF ARTISTIC INNOVATION AND STYLE
HOW IT STARTED
The New Wave era began in the late 1970s as a stylish,
synth-driven evolution of punk rock, blending pop
melodies with emerging electronic technology. Rooted in
punk’s rebellious spirit but embracing a more polished and
experimental sound, New Wave artists like Talking Heads,
Blondie, and Duran Duran pushed boundaries both
musically and visually. The rise of affordable synthesizers
and MTV’s launch in 1981 helped propel the movement,
turning music videos and fashion into
cultural cornerstones. By the mid-1980s, New Wave
had left a lasting impact, shaping the future of pop,
alternative, and electronic music.
